Why Notion backups matter

Notion is where most teams keep their operating manual: SOPs, project trackers, client wikis, HR handbooks and roadmaps. When a workspace member runs a bad database migration, deletes a template that other pages depend on, or an integration overwrites a property across thousands of rows, the damage spreads faster than page history can help you unpick.

A concrete scenario: a team refactors a Projects database, changes a select property to a status property and pushes the change with an automation. Every linked view across the workspace updates instantly, historic values are lost, and rolling back through per-page history for every affected page is impractical. A point-in-time snapshot taken this morning fixes it in one restore.

• Bad database migrations that cascade across linked views and rollups.

What Notion gives you natively

Notion has page history and a trash. Both help with small mistakes but neither is a real backup solution.

Understand exactly what is and is not covered before you decide you do not need external backups:

• Page edit history. Up to 30 days on paid plans, 90 days on Business, unlimited on Enterprise. Restores one page at a time, no workspace-wide rollback.
• Trash. Deleted pages can be recovered from the trash indefinitely, but only if you notice before an admin permanently deletes them.
• Workspace export. Manual ZIP export as Markdown or HTML. Loses relations, rollups, formulas and view configuration on re-import.

None of these give you point-in-time recovery for an entire workspace, and none of them protect against a compromised integration or a leaving employee purging pages.
