Notion backup guide

How to back up Notion automatically

A practical guide to protecting Notion pages, databases and workspaces against accidental edits, bad migrations and rogue integrations.

Last updated

To back up Notion automatically, connect your workspace to a dedicated backup service such as Backup247, pick a schedule (typically daily), and let it snapshot every page, database, block and attachment to encrypted storage in the EU. When something breaks, whether it is a single deleted page or an entire database wiped by a bad migration, you restore from a point-in-time snapshot rather than clicking through Notion's 30 or 90 day page history one page at a time.

Why Notion backups matter

Notion is where most teams keep their operating manual: SOPs, project trackers, client wikis, HR handbooks and roadmaps. When a workspace member runs a bad database migration, deletes a template that other pages depend on, or an integration overwrites a property across thousands of rows, the damage spreads faster than page history can help you unpick.

A concrete scenario: a team refactors a Projects database, changes a select property to a status property and pushes the change with an automation. Every linked view across the workspace updates instantly, historic values are lost, and rolling back through per-page history for every affected page is impractical. A point-in-time snapshot taken this morning fixes it in one restore.

  • Bad database migrations that cascade across linked views and rollups.
  • Rogue Notion API integrations bulk-updating or wiping properties.
  • Accidental page deletion beyond the trash retention window.
  • Departing team members deleting personal pages that contained shared content.
  • GDPR obligations: keeping evidence of what customer data existed and when.

What Notion gives you natively

Notion has page history and a trash. Both help with small mistakes but neither is a real backup solution.

Understand exactly what is and is not covered before you decide you do not need external backups:

  • Page edit history. Up to 30 days on paid plans, 90 days on Business, unlimited on Enterprise. Restores one page at a time, no workspace-wide rollback.
  • Trash. Deleted pages can be recovered from the trash indefinitely, but only if you notice before an admin permanently deletes them.
  • Workspace export. Manual ZIP export as Markdown or HTML. Loses relations, rollups, formulas and view configuration on re-import.

None of these give you point-in-time recovery for an entire workspace, and none of them protect against a compromised integration or a leaving employee purging pages.

For anything beyond a personal workspace, an automated backup with a real restore workflow is the only method that survives a serious incident without a weekend of copy-pasting.

Set up automated Notion backups

Connecting Notion to Backup247 takes about five minutes. There is no need for admin rights on paid Notion features, just an OAuth authorisation for the pages and databases you want to protect.

  1. Create your Backup247 account

Start the 14-day trial from the sign up page. No card required.

  2. Authorise Notion

Add Notion from the connectors screen and grant access to the pages and databases you want to back up. You can revoke this in Notion at any time.

  3. Pick a schedule

Daily is the default. Change to hourly for high-churn workspaces, or weekly for reference wikis.

  4. Set retention

Choose how long snapshots are kept, up to 365 days. Retention is independent of your Notion plan.

  5. Verify the first snapshot

Once the first run completes, browse the snapshot to confirm pages, databases and attachments are all captured before you rely on it.

See the connector details on the Notion integration page, or compare plans on pricing.

How restore works

The point of a backup is the restore. Backup247 gives you three restore paths, all from the same snapshot browser:

  • Single page. Preview any historical version and restore just that page. Sub-pages can be included or skipped.
  • Whole database. Restore every row, property and view definition from a chosen point in time. Existing rows are diffed so you can accept or reject each change.
  • Workspace-wide rollback. For catastrophic incidents, roll back everything to the last known good snapshot.

Notion backup checklist

  • Daily automated snapshot of every workspace that matters.
  • Retention of at least 90 days, longer if you have compliance obligations.
  • Backup storage in the EU with encryption at rest and a DPA on file.
  • Alerts when a scheduled backup fails or when row counts drop unexpectedly.
  • A restore drill every quarter: pick a random page, restore it, confirm it is intact.
  • Removal of departed team members from the Notion connector authorisation list.

Frequently asked questions

Does Notion have automatic backups?+

Notion keeps per-page edit history for 30 days on paid plans and 90 days on Business. There is no workspace-wide point-in-time restore, which is what most teams mean by 'backup'.

How often should I back up Notion?+

Daily is enough for most teams. Increase to hourly for workspaces with heavy automation, and weekly for reference-only wikis.

Can I restore a single Notion page from a backup?+

Yes. In Backup247 you browse the snapshot, preview the page and restore just that page, or include the whole sub-tree.

Where is my Notion backup data stored?+

Encrypted at rest in the EU (Frankfurt). A DPA and sub-processor list are available on request for GDPR compliance.

Do Notion API integrations affect backups?+

No. Backups capture the current state of your workspace regardless of which integration or human made the last change, so they are ideal for undoing a runaway automation.

What happens if I cancel my Notion subscription?+

You still have your Backup247 snapshots and can export them, which makes backups a practical exit strategy as well as a safety net.
